In a surprising turn of events, rumour has it that Scuderia Ferrari is entertaining thoughts of racing in IndyCar. To kick off the plan in gear, the manufacturer has begun preliminary discussions with with the American open-wheel series. According to series owner, Roger Penske, the idea is to join in by 2022.

Ferrari F1 boss Mattia Binotto added more fuel to the fire, with a May announcement that they were considering an entry. According to the Italian, the Maranello squad needs to re-deploy staff and resources owing to F1’s impending cost-cap. Now, Penske has confirmed that talks have taken place.

“Obviously we’re looking at potentially adding other manufacturers,” he told the Brick-by-Brick podcast. “You probably heard it, there’s been discussions with Ferrari, [who] might be interested in joining the series, coming in 2022 when we have the new engine rules, and that would be a great asset to have a third manufacturer in the series.”

Scuderia Ferrari has its finger in more than one pie

Aside from racing on American soil, Ferrari is trying to broaden its horizon and exploring other avenues. There were rumours of making a landfall in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

However, Penske believes that the Italian marquee is genuinely interested in making IndyCar a second home. Obviously, he would love to make it happen and have a team of Ferrari’s calibre on the grid.

“We are trying to attract new manufacturers to the sport,” he reiterated. “Ferrari has shown public interest before and so we have sat down for a talk. For IndyCar, Ferrari would be a great addition.”

If the Prancing Horse does end up in IndyCar, they will be joining the likes of McLaren, who have committed to the sport. The British outfit have partnered with the Arrow Schmidt-Peterson team for the 2020 season. However, they are planning to join in full-time.
