As the race reached an unexpected climax at the final three laps, both Aston Martin cars came out of the pits on the intermediate tires, ready to take on the rest of the race. However, Lance Stroll proceeded to collide with Sebastian Vettel on lap 49; probably missing his approaching teammate in the mirrors. While Vettel wishes to ignore the error, there were some serious discussions in the Aston Martin garage.

Sebastian Vettel was spotted talking to Otmar Szafnauer and Lawrence Stroll after the Russian GP. One can only assume it was about the unprecedented collision with Lance Stroll. Both drivers had a chance of finishing within the points; the team settled for a P11 and 12 finish, just outside the points.

Although the crash didn’t have any serious repercussions, it certainly slowed the drivers down. In a post-race interview, Vettel shared his thoughts on the incident. “I guess it was a misunderstanding and I’m not sure, I don’t think he saw me. So, maybe he didn’t expect me either. But fortunately nothing happened; unfortunately, we’re both out of the points.”

Looking back at the collision with his teammate, Stroll confirmed that the rain had affected his visibility, resulting in the collision. “It became very slippery out there and I did not see Sebastian alongside me.”

The rain was an unfortunate addition to Stroll’s race as the driver later spun off the track before crossing the checkered flag.

Lance Stroll penalized for Gasly collision

Pierre Gasly wasn’t absolved of the rain’s effect on Lance Stroll. As the rain hit the tarmac at Sochi, Stroll bolted into the rear of Gasly’s AlphaTauri heading into Turn 8. As a result, the Frenchman spun off the track; an incident which resulted in a penalty for Stroll

Lance Stroll now faces a 10-second time penalty, which has been added to his total race time. Additionally, the Canadian has also been given two penalty points, increasing his tally to eight points. Now four points away from a race ban, Stroll would have to be careful heading into his coming races.

While the driver had a strong start to the race, he eventually dropped down the grid towards the end; the rains further added to his woes. On a day where Aston Martin could have bagged some crucial championship points, the team fell short. With seven rounds left in the season, will the team improve their standings?
