The 2022 season ushered in a new era of Formula 1. It brings a slew of changes to the regulations and has switched up the hierarchy of the paddock. The team that seems to have benefitted the most from this is Ferrari. The Prancing Horse has seen a major revival that sees them top the drivers and constructors standings after the first 2 rounds of the season. More importantly, they are showing flashes of the early 2000s dominance that they enjoyed with Michael Schumacher. Could this finally be the season where Ferrari returns to the top of the sport once again?

Mattia Binotto and Michael Schumacher go way back

The dominance of the Ferrari team from 2000 to 2008 was nearly unparalleled until the Mercedes dominance of the turbo-hybrid era came into effect. The team not only had one of the greatest cars, they also boasted arguably the greatest driver the sport has seen, Michael Schumacher.

However, there was another current Ferrari main man, who was a part of the team back in their glory days. That is current Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto.

Back in the day, Mattia used to be an engineer with Ferrari and used to focus mainly on engine performance and reliability. Binotto and Schumacher started at Ferrari around the same time way back in 1995-96 and enjoyed multiple successful years.

The team has extended their lead in the constructors’ championship, following their double podium finish in Jeddah. They once again looked dominant. However, faced a major challenge from Red Bull. The Austrian team first stole pole with Sergio Perez and then went on to steal the race in with Max Verstappen in the dying stages of the race.

Mercedes once again struggled, with Hamilton going out in Q1. Jeddah also saw 5 DNFs, with Mick Schumacher and Yuki Tsunoda not starting. The race showed the fans that they will once again be treated to a heated title race if all things go well. F1 will now travel to Australia for the third race of the 2022 season.
