Daniel Ricciardo has become a bit of a rolling stone in F1 as he will be at his third team in four years in 2021. After moving teams so frequently, one could be forgiven for forgetting where one will have to pit during a race. Thus, McLaren, keen to avoid such a mishap, reminded him about where to pit during the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Australian left Red Bull for Renault ahead of the 2019 season, in a move that shocked everyone. However, after having a pretty underwhelming time at the French team, he made the switch to upwardly-mobile McLaren for the 2021 season. He is probably boosted by the fact they are powered by a Mercedes power unit in the 2021 season.

When Ricciardo was about to enter the pitlane, his race engineer reminded where to pit, telling him that it’s the “Pit crew in orange.

This made sense as the team is distinctive on the grid for its papaya orange color.

McLaren had reasons for doing so. Funnily enough, they were on the other side of such an instance back in 2013. Lewis Hamilton had switched from McLaren to Mercedes ahead of the 2013 season.

In only his second race for the German team, he committed a bit of a gaffe. When he was ordered into the pitlane, he mistakenly went to the pit box of McLaren instead of Mercedes. Both teams, at the time, shared very similar liveries and racing overalls. And having spent quite some time with McLaren, Lewis had a bit of trouble realizing that he was no longer their driver.

How did the Aussie fare at Bahrain?

Ricciardo enjoyed a pretty unremarkable debut race for McLaren at Bahrain. He finished in seventh, three places below teammate Lando Norris. However, the Aussie won’t be too unhappy with his first outing, as his performance before the race was somewhat decent.

He showed that he has great pace as he qualified for an impressive P6 on Saturday. Ricciardo was as much a victim of how the cards fell on the day of the race.

Now, the Australian will be looking to build on this. And as a result, slowly ramp up his comfort level within the McLaren as the season goes on.
