To say that Max Verstappen was not a happy man after Baku qualifying, would be a gross understatement. Last time around, red flags prevented him from grabbing pole at Monaco. Sadly, lightning struck twice and another red flag cost him a pole position in Azerbaijan. Coincidentally, it was a Ferrari that brought out the red flags on both occasions.

The only difference was that Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri was involved in the second incident. Needless to say, the Dutchman was furious to miss out yet again. He said on the radio, “This is so painful, man! On the street circuit all the time, these stupid red flags. Unbelievable! What can you do about it?”

He added, “Hahaha! What can you do about it?”

What made this even crueler was the fact that he was the fastest in the first two sectors. In other words, had Carlos Sainz and Yuki Tsunoda not crashed, Verstappen would have stood a chance to grab pole position.

Max Verstappen will be determined to make up for it

Two weeks ago, Charles Leclerc took provisional pole in Monaco but crashed out on his final flying lap. This time around, it was Sainz who crashed out, when Tsunoda’s crash seemingly distracted him. Nevertheless, Leclerc bagged pole position for the second race in succession.

Now, the Red Bull driver will start from third place on the grid behind Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Alongside him on the second row will be his former teammate Pierre Gasly in the AlphaTauri. Finally, a disappointed Sainz Jr will line up in fifth place ahead of Lando Norris, Sergio Perez, Tsunoda, Fernando Alonso, and Valtteri Bottas.

Verstappen has never won at Azerbaijan and he will not go down easily if he does not add this race to his win collection. Luckily, he will be starting on the clean side of the track and will hope to get a better launch off the line. If he does, not only can he sweep past Hamilton, but he could gun down Leclerc.
