Lewis Hamilton has recently opened up on the infamous 2020 Silverstone GP. During the race, the seven-time world champion had massively struggled with his tires and eventually ended up getting a puncture towards the end of the race. However, using his prowess and the distance he had achieved from the rest of the pack, the 37-year-old did emerge victorious.

Although this nail-biting incident dates back to August 2020, we as fans recently got to hear some great insights into the event from Lewis himself. The British F1 Driver talked about his experience with CrowdStrike in an interview.

Lewis was in the interview with Danny Hornigold and George Kurtz, CrowdStrike CEO. CrowdStrike, who is a sponsor of Mercedes AMG, recently hosted the 2020 F1 World Champion for an interview. The interview was their fourth installment of the series entitled ‘A Formula for Success’.

During the interview, Lewis was asked about his Silverstone GP scare. Talking about the incident we can recall Hamilton, who was on his second last lap when he made his infamous radio call with his race engineer that said “Bono my tires are gone. Think something happened to my left tire also.”

Despite having lost his front left tire, Lewis Hamilton was limping on his way to victory. However, he needed to make a perfect call to evade his opponents from taking advantage of the situation. Had Lewis made the call earlier, Verstappen wouldn’t have pitted before the last lap. Hamilton, talking about this has conveyed in the interview, “Well you know what, sometimes the worst this is that you bluff your own team. So you’ve got to be careful.” The 37-year-old further reveals in the interview how his day was saved for making the right call at the right time.

What exactly happened at Silverstone in 2020?

During the 50th lap of the race, Hamilton was leading the GP from Bottas, Verstappen, Leclerc, and Sainz. In this dramatic end to the 2020 British Grand Prix, Bottas was the first one to fall prey to the left front tire puncture, followed by Sainz and finally Hamilton.

Before losing his tire, the Briton made sure he makes the call a little late to keep other teams at bay. Meanwhile, Lewis’s engineer Bono advised him to take care of his tires. In no time, the Mercedes man too lost his front left tire and was limping on his way to the chequered flag.

Lucky for the British driver, Verstappen pitted to take the fastest lap and established a pit window between him and the race leader. However, due to Hamilton’s puncture, the Dutchman reduced the 30 seconds gap to a mere 6 seconds gap. Had Max not pitted, Lewis would have had to settle for P2.

As he says in the interview, “There have been times when it worked in benefit, but it’s a very very very fine line.” In the race, Lewis played this brilliant strategy by letting his team know his situation when it was too late for the opposition to react.
