Lando Norris possibly made the biggest mistake of his career yet at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, where following his instincts over’s the team’s horribly backfired as he lost an incredible opportunity to secure his first-ever race victory in Formula 1.
One decision, hardly a couple of laps away from the chequered flag, cost him the lead along with 5 additional positions, as he ultimately came home in P7. What a heartbreaking moment that was!
Well, it looks like the Briton has learned his lesson. During a live stream, Norris mentored his anonymous gaming colleague to always pit when it is about to start raining.

What did Lando Norris say?
Norris and his ‘friend’ were busy racing each other at the Red Bull Ring in what looks like the latest edition of the F1 video game, F1 2021.

And when Norris realized that it was going to rain in the race, he ordered his friend to box rather than risk running on the slicks. He further pointed out that his real-life on-track experience has led him to push for such a decision.
“It’s gonna rain, let’s not box. Actually, do box. My last experience didn’t go well in the rain. It’s gonna rain and you are on the slicks, you should always box,” he said.
How it all happened at the Russian Grand Prix
The final laps of the Russian GP were indeed painful to watch, especially for the Norris fans. Norris defended like a champion against the fellow British world champion, Lewis Hamilton. But, crucially, it looked like the skies were about to open up. Hence, both Mercedes and McLaren demanded their drivers to pit.
Hamilton neglected once but, on the very next lap, he trusted his team’s call and went through with it. Meanwhile, Norris was fearing he might lose his lead to Hamilton or others behind him if the rain stops after switching to intermediate tires. Reasonable concern.
And that fear kept him on the track for another lap, which ended up being the worst possible decision he could have made. Rains laid waste on the circuit, and the combination of a wet track and slick tires is almost like walking barefoot shoes on ice.

It took Norris over 3 minutes to complete his lap on the slicks and make his way to the pits. And by the time he returned to the track, he was P7.
Overall, irrespective of who ultimately won the race, it was an absolutely spectacular end to the weekend at Sochi, a circuit that was often criticized for not offering enough action. Only this time, rains came to the rescue and did its job in the most dramatic fashion.
