The Sakhir Grand Prix has officially concluded with the unlikeliest of podiums. However, one of the biggest stories of the race was Mercedes throwing away a surefire win and double podium. The biggest loser in that was poor old George Russell, who eventually scrounged his first points.
A 9th-place finish meant that he picked up two points. Although he should be delighted with finally opening his points’ tally, he cannot help but rue what could have been.
Russell had been completely dominant, and it was his race to lose, and he lost it. After Jack Aitken spun and wrecked his front wing, Mercedes tried to be clever and attempted a double-stack.

Unfortunately, it backfired, and they lost an easy victory. When the race concluded, a sheepish Mercedes team radioed Russell and apologized to him.
They said, “Okay George, really sorry about that mate. Honestly, you had the pace today. Really sorry you ended up in that situation. Still… points today, you showed your strength.”
George Russell was devastated to lose out like this
The Mercedes substitute driver confessed that he was absolutely gutted. However, he tried to look at the positive and insisted that they will get a similar opportunity again.
“Guys, I don’t know what to say. I was taken away from those twice… It’s been a real pleasure. I f*****g loved it. And honestly, I’m gutted. I’m absolutely gutted. But we’ll get this opportunity again. I hope we get this opportunity again! Thank you,” exclaimed a rather despondent Russell.
Even James Allison and Toto Wolff got on the radio to congratulate the driver despite the circumstances. Russell was hugely devastated because he had the opportunity to take the win or podium on two occasions.

Without a doubt, Russell could have been primed for a maiden victory, or at worst, a podium. Unfortunately, luck did not swing his way, and a series of mishaps denied him a chance at glory.

To make matters even worse, poor old Russell is under investigation. During the Mercedes mix-up, the team fit the wrong tires on his car when they attempted a double-stack under the yellow flags.
Bottas also had a slow stop, and the two were called in again. Then, in what can only be described as ‘shenanigans’, George Russell picked up a puncture. This saw him drop even lower down the order, and a chance of a win or podium slipped right through his fingers.
