Recently, Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo spoke to Barstool Breakfast in an interview. He opened up on a variety of subjects, including his famous Shoey celebration. The Australian driver confessed that when he started the act of drinking champagne out of a shoe, many would hate him.
However, he was pleasantly surprised and delighted when the fans loved the stunt. Ricciardo also named a few celebrities who took part in the celebration. Among them were, renowned actors Sir Patrick Stewart and Gerard Butler. Aside from the celebrities, other drivers also had to do it as a form of humiliation for beating them on track.

The “Shoey” is an Australian tradition, that Daniel Ricciardo popularised in Formula One circles. Here, the drinker removes their own shoe and pours the entire contents of a can of beer into the shoe’s opening. However Daniel Ricciardo used champage instead of beer.
Interestingly, Formula One Licensing registered a trademark for the “Shoey” in more than 25 countries. This was in relation to merchandise like flasks, glasses, bottles, mugs, sculptures and figurines.
The Renault driver even confessed to the media about his concerns over the ‘famous’ celebration. He feared that the podium ritual may be getting out of control. So he wanted to stop it in its tracks.

Delving deeper, Ricciardo revealed the origin of the celebration. In 2016, he mentioned that a group of Australian fishing and surfing fanatics, dubbed the Mad Hueys, inspired this crazy celebration. In the same year, MotoGP rider Jack Miller celebrated his first win and drank champagne from his racing boot during the podium presentation.
Needless to say, the Shoey celebration really picked up a lot of steam. Since it was first seen in Formula One, it has always been associated with Daniel Ricciardo.
