Every team sport in the world highlights a sense of loyalty to the fans and entities involved with the sport. However, this unwavering loyalty also becomes the reason for heartbreak if there is any form of defection. Lewis Hamilton fans suffered this heartbreak back in 2013 when he left McLaren to join Mercedes. As it turns out, it was the correct decision from the Brit and the Papaya Army will forgive him for changing sides. Although, the love for McLaren in Hamilton’s heart has never died. Or so Lando Norris believes as he revealed his conversations with the Brit that gave him the idea.
In the world of Formula 1, loyalty and prolonged relationships are common factors. Looking at Hamilton’s career in his 16 years, he has represented only two teams. Even though the Brit has enjoyed the majority of his success with Mercedes, one can never forget their first love. In fact, McLaren supported Hamilton’s junior career as well. This is exactly why Norris believes, as quoted by RaceFans, that Hamilton still has a soft spot for the papaya team.
“He still has a lot of respect for McLaren and I think he still has a lot of love for McLaren,” said Norris. “I think he wants us to do well, which is still a nice thing because it’s where he started his career. I feel like wherever you start your career, you kind of owe them something in a way. And McLaren gave me an opportunity, so I’ll do something for them. Like I said, [the relationship] is growing, it’s good, getting to know each other more, which is a cool thing,” he concluded.
