When Alpine announced the sacking of Otmar Szafnauer and Alan Permane, there weren’t a lot of statements or opinions on it. But now that a few days have passed, everybody is giving their take on the sudden move by the Enstone outfit. And after Mattia Binotto has been rumored to replace Szafnauer, Sergio Perez has given his fiery take on the subject as well.
In 2023, Alpine went from a Top 4 team to a bottom half team. And the team bosses wanted a quicker turnaround than Szafnauer could promise them. So, they parted ways with him. And to replace him, Binotto, on ‘gardening leave’ with Ferrari, was their best bet. However, this decision has not gone down well with Perez. And he has made his displeasure known to the Alpine management.
Perez said, as quoted by formula1news, “Yeah, I was quite surprised with it, given how short notice it was. I think Otmar is great. For any person in that position, you’ve got to give them time. I think Otmar lacked time to really show his potential, which I know is huge because I’ve seen what he’s done in other teams with very limited budgets, and with not-so-limited budgets as well. It is a shame that they let him move on.”

Looking at Perez’s performance and then at his sympathy for Szafnauer, there seems to be a connection between the two. There might be a slight possibility that he finds a bit of his struggling self in this happening. Nevertheless, he has shifted the focus onto his RB19 for not supporting him.

Instead of a straightforward domination in 2023, Red Bull is having a contrasting season. And the credit for the underperforming side of things goes to Sergio Perez. While all the noise in the media points to him being in a downward spiral, the Mexican racer believes that there is something odd with his car that is baffling the team.
“There is a deficit that I’ve been experiencing with the car in the last few races,” said Perez, as quoted by Mirror. “Whenever there is a change of condition, it tends to get wider this ‘limit’. Let’s put it that way. That has been something that has caught us out.”
