The occasion of Toto Wolff’s birthday calls for a special throwback, one we may have forgotten about. Back in 2020, the Mercedes team principal and his star driver shared a hilarious moment off the racetrack; a moment Lewis Hamilton managed to capture perfectly.

Wolff put his driving skills to the test and may have failed. Mercedes shared a video of their boss’ driving incident. Toto simply clarified: “I think I’m off the track.” The Austrian drove his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution into the snow.

Further, Lewis too poked fun at his team principal. “Toto ran outta talent!” Hamilton shows the lopsided car as Wolff makes his way through the snow. Hamilton reasoned that maybe he may have distracted Toto by being on the radio.

Lewis Hamilton & Toto Wolff’s strong bond

The two friends have been a part of the F1 legacy. As a result, to two are incredibly close. In 2021, Hamilton shed light on when exactly he knew he found a confidant in his boss.

“Between 2015 and 2016 there was a period in which our bond really grew, and then consolidated in 2017. We began to build a common ground and discuss in a deeper way, without being afraid to show each other’s weaknesses and also the strong sides of our character.”

Hamilton further admitted, “I would say that we complement each other. And that we are true friends.”

Wolff, too, has mentioned this decisive turning point. Sharing with a bit more detail, Wolff contextualized his story with Hamilton’s infamous Silver War with Rosberg. “We ended up in my house after the Christmas party of the team and discussed everything, the inconvenient truths, and it ended up in a few hours of conversation. Since then our relationship has become very strong and we speak to each other many times every week and we’re able to just discuss things even if they’re awkward to discuss.”

Wolff also explained that their conversations aren’t limited to racing. “We talk about his fashion venture and my investments and family and this is important. The better you know the person with whom you’re on the same journey, the stronger the relationship gets.”
