The Belgian GP is far from forgotten; more so because of the fun on the paddock than the rain that caused it. The most enduring moment, however, took place in the Haas garage where fans spotted a four-time world champion with a rookie, as Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher played some football together. Soon, fans realized a sense of deja vu.
On a day where Mick wanted to honor his father, his match with Sebastian Vettel was a nod to the legend as well. Michael Schumacher, too, brought out a football when the rain-delayed his races. Additionally, a young Vettel used to be his football partner. Watching Vettel carry on the tradition with Schumi Jr brought warmth to the cold, rainy day.

Michael Schumacher had made his F1 debut at Spa 30 years ago. For his first run at the circuit, Mick honored his father. Along with replicating Michael’s helmet, he also wore a t-shirt with ‘For Seven’ printed on it. The small gesture was both smart and touching.

Having the race taken away from him because of the rain, Mick still managed to carry on the Schumacher name in Belgium. Not in the way he wanted it, but he pulled it off.

Seb is to Mick what Michael was to him- a mentor and friend. Michael Schumacher was Vettel’s idol growing up. A fellow German, the driver aspired to be like the legend. Eventually, Michael and Seb became friends; Vettel is presently very close to the Schumacher family.

With Mick’s initiation into F1 this season, Vettel had hoped to return the favor. “I’m happy to help, but I think it’s important for him to find his own path, follow his own way. As much as it helped me that Michael had things to say when I asked, I’m trying to do the same thing to him.”

The initial mentorship has blossomed into a captivating friendship, one where Mick reciprocates the respect. Per Planet F1, he once said, “I have huge respect for him and I think we can call that a friendship, which is very nice for me. He has got so much experience and [there is] so much I can learn from him.”
Mick had also revealed the most pertinent advice Sebastian Vettel gave him. “The biggest advice is really to never forget why I am here, because we love the sport, and I guess once you lose that, you are in the wrong place.”
