The race at Monza has been a thrilling one. However, everyone collectively held their breath as the championship contenders collided with each other in the most unusual way. As Lewis Hamilton exited the pit lane, he collided with Max Verstappen in the opening chicane.

While no one has pointed fingers yet, what we know is that Verstappen jumped the kerb and complained about not having enough place to get through. Simultaneously, Lewis moved forward, and soon found himself under the Red Bull car.

Both drivers had slow pit stops and were looking to make up for it. So, the two rivals attempted to battle it to get ahead of each other. The collision was a shocking one, as two very disappointed drivers walked back to the pit lane.

However, looking at the replays, Lewis Hamilton was lucky to make it back to the garage. The Halo prevented some major damage to the champion’s head as Verstappen’s Red Bull dangled over it.

Lewis Hamilton narrowly escapes

The Halo more than did its job at the Italian GP. As the Mercedes went under the rival car, the rear end of the RB16B avoided contact with Hamilton’s helmet because of the Halo.

On closer inspection, one can see the tire slightly hitting Hamilton’s head, as the driver slouched down in his cockpit. What could have been a fatal outcome for Hamilton was prevented by the extraordinary precautions taken by the sport.

Once again, technology and innovation have prevented disaster on the track as the competition has been as intense as ever. As the drivers continue to push hard for points and position, it’s times like these where the often ignored details of the sport come into play.

Hopefully, Hamilton doesn’t have any repercussions from the collision later on, as he has the race in Sochi to make up for a disastrous Italian GP.
