Valtteri Bottas lived under Lewis Hamilton’s shadow for 4 years at Mercedes. He was made to play second fiddle to his champion teammate even when he did not want to. Now that he has started his journey with Alfa Romeo, the Fin made a cheeky remark at his former team earlier in the season.

Valtteri Bottas contributed towards Mercedes’ 5 constructors’ championship wins. He even finished 2nd in 2019 and 2020 behind Lewis Hamilton. However, he could never win the coveted championship for himself. Just as Bottas joined Mercedes after impressing at Williams, so did George Russell, who replaced him at the Silver Arrows.
Valtteri Bottas took a sly dig at Mercedes’ form
Valtteri Bottas is currently serving the role of the senior driver at Alfa Romeo. As teammate Zhou Guanyu has only managed 6 points, the Finnish driver has 46 points to his name. He has shown that while he may have fallen out of favor at Mercedes, he still has a lot of racing left in him.
Last year, Lewis Hamilton missed out on the drivers’ championship title, while Mercedes won the constructors’ title. However, the tables have turned this season and Mercedes hasn’t been able to put together a competitive car. Taking a dig at his former team, earlier this season, Valtteri said, “I think Ferrari, Red Bull, I feel like they are like a bit out of reach for everyone. But who knows, maybe we can battle Mercedes. That could be fun.”

Last year, Alfa Romeo finished 9th in the constructors’ standings with just 13 points. This year, they are currently defending the 6th position from the likes of Aston Martin, Haas, and AlphaTauri. This would not have been possible had they not had a driver like Bottas, who has 46 points out of a total of 52.

Alfa Romeo delivered the lightest car and impressed everyone with the results as the season began. As time passed, Aston Martin caught up with just 7 points left between the two. Aston Martin has added 20 points to their tally in the last two races while the Swiss team has only managed a single point in the last 9 races.
These are not the only two teams targeting the 6th position, though. Haas and AlphaTauri are on the hunt as well, with 34 points each. While the two are currently struggling for points, nothing can be ruled out.
