Lewis Hamilton has a varied spectrum of interests outside the domain of motor racing. Anything that can replace, or at least try to, the thrill of going on rails in the fastest cars in the world, is something the 7x Champion would lap up. Surfing, is that. That being said, though, Hamilton has imposed on himself a certain geographical restriction when it comes to surfing. And the reason for it might actually be a very rational one!

Formula 1 recently released outtakes from its Grill the Grid series. During one segment, Hamilton was quoted saying, “I just don’t go in the actual ocean cause I know there’s actual sharks there! They have a very high rate of shark attacks in Florida, from what I know. Australia and Florida are the two places people get eaten!”, he chuckled.
“Like if you’re on the beach in Miami, how many people do you ever see in the water? Not very many, not past their ankles!” Well, luckily for him, 11x World Surf league Champion, Kelly Slater has a surfing ranch in California. And Hamilton chooses to spend his surfing hours there instead of sunny Florida.
But as it turn out, Sharks aren’t the only things that freak the British F1 legend out!

The 7x Champ risks his life week in week out in a Formula 1 car. But that’s okay. It turns out, even after taking risks beyond comprehensibility, Lewis Hamilton is in fact but is still petrified of something very small.
He revealed to Vanity Fair that he was an arachnophobe, “It’s pathetic, but I do. People say: ‘Dude! You drive around at 200 miles an hour!’ And I’m like, in terms of fear factor, that’s easy for me. I guess we’re just all wired differently.”

Having said that, Hamilton’s biggest concern right now wouldn’t be sharks and spiders. He undoubtedly would squarely put all his focus on what his team at Brackley would be doing for the 2023 season. Can Mercedes give the Brit capable machinery to fight for that elusive 8th title next year?
