Lewis Hamilton has fulfilled his promise to best friend and Olympic fencer Miles Chamley-Watson. A week before his historic British GP win, the Mercedes driver’s promise to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics to support Chamley-Watson’s quest for gold was revealed. The USA fencer, who revealed finding solace in sharing his deepest emotions with Hamilton, now has the 7-time champion in the stands cheering for him at the men’s foil team event.

In the build-up to his third stint at the Olympics, the foil fencer opened up on friendship and mental health. “Crying and laughing in front of your best friend is so important. Especially men, talking about everything with each other, those are your friends,” Chamley-Watson emphasized. The British-born American fencer also gave a glimpse into his close friendship with Hamilton. “Sometimes with my best friend Lewis, he will always push me to just ‘what’s going to happen to you bruv?'”

Similarly, the 7-time F1 champion had also shared that they “talk pretty much every day.” Today, for the first time, Hamilton has reciprocated Chamley-Watson’s presence at several F1 races by being in attendance in Paris for his Olympics battle. He also sported the Chamley-Watson merch as the cherry on top. However, the Briton wasn’t alone. To maximize his best friend’s zeal, he ensured that even the stands weren’t devoid of celebrities. Accompanying him were close friends Hollywood star Nina Dobrev and her partner, 3-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White. American rapper Snoop Dogg was also in attendance.

Chamley-Watson’s battles will surely be nail-biters. The American would look to better his bronze from Rio 2016 to achieve the highest honor in the sporting world – the priceless Olympic gold. His grit might also have rubbed off on Hamilton because the Olympics fever has gripped the F1 driver quite hard.

Lewis Hamilton’s surprising stance on his potential Olympics debut

Racing fast cars for a living is what Lewis Hamilton is best at. Unfortunately, motorsport has no place in the Olympics. In 2012, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge said, “The concept we are having is the games are about the competition for the athletes, not for equipment (cars). Therefore, while having a lot of respect, they will not be included into the Olympic program,” he concluded.

Luckily for Hamilton, he turns whatever he touches into gold. From surfing to rifle shooting, his range is unbelievable. When CNN questioned the 7-time champion about his prospects for an Olympics debut, he immediately ruled out motorsport. “Not for motorsport,” he said, as the interviewer interrupted him to ask about the possibility of surfing being his entry into the Olympics. “No, I am not good enough for that,” he humbly replied with a smile. “But I don’t know. Maybe I’ll do an Olympic sport someday if I’m not too old,” he added, letting out a chuckle.

Though he’s extremely good at riding waves, he’s even better at shooting. Champion shooter and Hollywood weapons trainer Taran Butler labeled Hamilton as the most “naturally gifted” shooter after witnessing the Mercedes driver’s first-ever shooting attempt at a firing range. In the same way that nobody anticipated him to jump ship to Ferrari at what is otherwise considered retirement age, the 39-year-old could soon grace an even bigger stage at the Olympics. Don’t know about you, but this excites us quite a lot.
