Probably the longest-running three-way rivalry ended after Sebastian Vettel’s retirement. We are obviously talking about the trio of Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso. However, it was the Vettel Vs Hamilton that took center stage after the two went head to head for many years. Although a throwback video will tell you who Alonso thinks is better.

During his time at Ferrari, Alonso witnessed the Red Bull and Vettel domination. However, the Spaniard still believed his former teammate Hamilton edged the German, based on one aspect. The aspect? Ability to win in non-competitive machinery.

In an interview back in 2012, the then-Ferrari man was asked to explain his comment about Vettel not being on the same level as Hamilton. He said, “I know Lewis may be better than Sebastian being teammates in McLaren and racing maybe a couple of years more together.”

Alonso then explained why he feels Hamilton is better than Vettel. “So in those years, I saw Lewis winning races with not maybe the best car. I saw Lewis doing amazing performances when sometimes he was not a competitive car in the hands,” he explained.

“And these things? At the moment we didn’t see with Sebastian. I still miss this performance from Sebastian when maybe the Red Bull is ready to do eighth or seventh and when I see Sebastian winning the race, being in the podium. That will put him, I think, at the same level of Lewis,” he concluded.

This is a completely different outlook towards the two world champions compared to present-day comments of Alonso.

Fernando Alonso was more accepting of Lewis Hamilton back in 2012 compared to 2022

The new Aston Martin man was definitely warmer to the Mercedes man back in 2012 than he is now. There have been a couple of instances already.

First, it was the rant following the coming together at Spa. Later, it was Alonso’s comments about Hamilton’s world championships.

He said, “Max’s titles are worth more than Hamilton’s. I have a lot of respect for Lewis but it’s different when you win seven world championships having only had to fight against your team-mate.”

Both these instances show Alonso might not be on the best terms with Hamilton. However, in 2012, Alonso appreciated Hamilton’s racing. What do you think has changed in the last ten years between the two world champions?
