It keeps getting better and better every race for the Mercedes driver George Russell. The British driver once again finished on the podium at the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday.

With his P3 finish in Baku, he has matched a unique record that was previously set by former world champion Nico Rosberg. Russell has now finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton in 7 consecutive races in 2022.

This was the same feat achieved by Rosberg from Mexico in 2015 to Russia in 2016. By beating 7-time world champion so regularly, Russell is just proving his worth race after race in F1.

He was once again there to pick up the pieces and capitalize on the mistakes and failures made by the front runners. It was his 3rd podium of the season, meaning that he has extended his streak of finishing in the top 5 in every single race.

Despite being almost a second behind Ferrari and Red Bull on the track, both Russell and Hamilton were able to finish behind the Red Bulls after Ferraris’s failures. They finished P3 and P4 for the third time this season. But had contracting comments while analyzing their races.
“We’ve been in the top five every single race with a car that’s probably not always deserving of that, so as a team, we have fully maximized it. I can’t think of any event in that we probably could’ve scored higher,” said Russell.

“It’s… probably the most painful race that I have experienced and the toughest battle with a car that I have ever experienced as well. I’m glad it’s over,” said the 7-time world champion.

It is certainly interesting to see that despite being behind the front runners in terms of pure pace, Mercedes have managed to mag podiums with reliability. They have slowly crept up into the constructors’ championship and are close to Ferrari.
But they need to solve their issues quickly before the halfway mark or they might not get a shot to fight for the title. It would be interesting to see if there are any further upgrades that they can introduce to the car to improve it.
