The qualifying session at the British GP was a bitter-sweet one for the Italian constructor, Ferrari. The Spaniard, Carlos Sainz clinched his maiden pole position in Formula 1 at the event. However, on the other side of the garage, Charles Leclerc managed to grab P3 and failed to lock out the front row.

The three segments Q1, Q2, and Q3 were all affected by a downpour which made the conditions really tricky. This presented the 20 drivers with a challenge to find grip on a soaking Silverstone track. The testing conditions translated into a spin by both championship protagonists, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
The Red Bull driver on his initial Q3 push lap spun 360°, but managed to keep his RB-18 on track to complete his lap. This spin cost Max 2 seconds worth lap time, which meant he failed to put in a time-worth pole position. However, the Dutchman on his final push lap encountered yellow flags due to a spin by Charles Leclerc.

The Monegasque has successfully grabbed pole position 6 times in the 2022 season. Leclerc is arguably driving the fastest car on the grid and was one of the favorites for pole at the British GP.
Nevertheless, the spin on his last push lap hampered his ambitions of pole position and translated into elation for his teammate. Notably, Charles managed to save his F1-75 from crashing into the barriers, despite spinning 360° like Max.

The save from the driver racing with the number 16 was a crucial one as it would have resulted in his Ferrari sustaining high damage. Last time out in Canada, Leclerc received a grid penalty for a fresh power unit. Thus, damage here at Silverstone would not have helped him in his quest for the championship title.
The good news for Leclerc is that he managed to split the Red Bull drivers on the grid. Starting in P3 gives him a strong chance to take the fight to his teammate in pole and Verstappen in second.
