Mercedes’ domination during the early Turbo-Hybrid V6 era was on another level at that time. Nobody expected Mercedes, who joined F1 in 2010 to start dominating 2014 onwards and continue it for 8 long years. Nonetheless, Mercedes has been on a downward trajectory for a couple of years now. Despite the downfall, Toto Wolff stays strong as he reveals the reason behind his mental toughness. 

Ever since the change in regulations that started in 2022, Mercedes has been on a downward slope failing to produce a championship-winning car. Red Bull, on the other hand, has been running away with the championship with the fastest car. Nonetheless, Toto Wolff hasn’t given up hope and stays strong-headed for Mercedes’ future comeback. Let’s see how Wolff is able to stay strong.

Toto Wolff’s father passed away when Wolff was still a kid. The Austrian had to deal with his father’s passing away whilst taking care of his sister. The Mercedes CEO revealed how their family had to shift to a smaller place because of his father’s illness. He added that sometimes he and his sister had to leave school in between classes, as their tuition fee wasn’t paid.

Toto Wolff explained to BBC how it was very difficult for him to explain to his sister why they were kicked out of school. According to BBC.co.uk, Toto Wolff said “You don’t wish [on] any child or adolescent such a situation. But it has shaped me in a way that my determination is strong and my resilience levels are high. You know, when we don’t perform in Formula 1, that doesn’t even move the needle. For me, that is so far away from suffering or pain.”

Mercedes at the moment is competing with McLaren, Ferrari, and Aston Martin for the best-of-the-rest spot as Red Bull is flying high with the RB19 rocket. Toto Wolff suggests this is not what Mercedes wants as they’re all about winning championships. He added that Mercedes needs to learn and return next year with a championship-winning car.

According to InsideSport, Toto Wolff said “P2 or P3 fundamentally doesn’t impact me and the team. It’s about coming back and being able to win a world championship in that respect. That’s not going to happen this year. So we need to set our eyes to next year and then, at all the races to come, learn and develop, and make sure that we can carry that forward into next year.”
