What’s happening in the Gaza Strip right now is a humanitarian crisis that needs attention. It dates back to the Israel-Palestine war that started in the 19th century. It’s a conflict over territory, one that hasn’t stopped since Israel became a nation-state. 10 days ago, the war escalated again as the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel. Focused near the Gaza Strip, that area has seen more casualties than there should’ve been. Now, there have been calls for action and calls for help that have come out of the area, and affected children have found an ally in the Formula 1 community. It’s Max Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly Piquet.

Kelly Piquet is a lot of things. She’s a model, a columnist, and a PR professional. But first and foremost, she’s a mother. As a mother, her instinct is always to look out for not just her daughter but for any child who needs help. That’s exactly what she’s doing for the children in Gaza.

In 1947, the UN intervened and made a partition plan to divide Palestine into Arab and Jewish States. In 1948, Israel became a nation-state, but Palestine didn’t. That led to the first Arab-Israel war, ending in Israel’s victory. But as that happened, almost a million Palestinians were displaced, and the territory was divided into three parts—the State of Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.

Because of the violence in Gaza that’s seen thousands dead and injured, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) is seeking donations to help provide immediate medical care for those affected by the war, especially children. The PCRF also provides free medical care to children in the Middle East, and its need for donations is driving relief efforts for children in need.

The PCRF’s efforts obviously struck a chord with Kelly Piquet. So far, the organization has raised $2.7 million, but it’s only halfway to its goal. Piquet not only donated to the cause but also shared the donation link on her Instagram story. No one likes to see people get hurt, especially when they did nothing to deserve it. Seeing the plight of children in the Gaza Strip right now was motivation enough for Piquet to support and further the cause.

As a person who has a platform to influence people and spread the word, she’s always advocated child care and safety.

Right now, no other cause for her could be as important as helping the children in Gaza and ensuring their safety. As important as that is, she also knows how crucial child safety is in general, not just in times of war. Piquet practically grew up on F1 tracks because her father, Nelson Piquet, was a driver himself. So she knows the importance of safety. And now that she’s a mother, that concept is all the more critical.

While promoting the German brand Cybex’s car safety products for children, she talked to Kek Mama about the importance of child safety. She said, “Education is crucial when it comes to the topic of child safety. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to share my experiences as I have been on F1 circuits all my life, and of course most importantly, my experiences as a mother.”
