The Sochi Autodrom just blew away all allegations of being a boring track to race at by providing us with the spectacular 2021 Russian GP. F1 has shown us once more how ruthless it can be, and how a daydream can turn into a nightmare within just five laps. And we can’t help but sit in agony and disbelief, as Lando Norris, chasing his first-ever Grand Prix victory, had the win snatched away from him in the last few laps.
The culprits? Weather, inexperience, and a that which went wrong.

To put things into perspective, Lando Norris, in a McLaren, was chasing his first-ever Grand Prix victory. Had he won the race, he would have been the third-youngest driver ever to win a Grand Prix. And he was being chased down by the seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes, who was, in turn, chasing his 100 GP win.

Lando was doing an immense job of defending his position and keeping Lewis at bay. With 5 laps left, it started raining, and the drivers couldn’t find any grip at all. Most of the drivers started pitting for the intermediate tires; Lando and Hamilton were stuck in a dilemma of whether they should pit.
Finally, Hamilton did pit, and Lando decided to risk it and stay out; this turned out to be the wrong decision in the end, and he lost control and spun out of the track, handing the Russian GP victory to Lewis Hamilton.
