The world of Formula 1 has been graced by many German drivers since its inception in 1950. However, it was not until the arrival of Michael Schumacher in the 1990s that Germany produced a champion who is still widely revered as the greatest racer in the sport’s history. Among the many young Germans inspired by Schumacher’s success was Sebastian Vettel, whose journey and relationship with his childhood hero have recently come to light.

The impact of Schumacher’s back-to-back titles with Benetton was profound, sparking a shift in attitude towards motorsport in Germany. Youngsters across the country, including Sebastian Vettel, were inspired to take up the sport, hoping to emulate their hero’s success. Vettel’s story, in particular, has striking similarities to Schumacher’s, both hailing from modest backgrounds and starting their motorsport journey at the same karting track near Cologne.

Vettel recently unveiled a delightful questionnaire from his past from 2007 in an Instagram post, casting light on his initial journey into F1 where he earned the affectionate nickname “baby Schumi”. Apparently, it was Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport that gave Seb this nickname, as they felt he resembled the looks of Schumacher. He justified this title by securing four consecutive world titles with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013. When asked about his childhood hero, Vettel fondly responded, “Good old Michael.”

Schumacher served as more than just an inspiration, taking on an informal mentorship role during Vettel’s formative years in the sport. This close bond caused Vettel to feel a deep impact when Schumacher endured a skiing accident in 2013. Ever since then, Schumacher has been in a coma as Seb has missed his mentor while faltering to win a 5th title after 2013.

Vettel’s immense gratitude towards Schumacher led him to reciprocate the mentorship when Schumacher’s son, Mick, made his entrance into the world of Formula 1.

With Mick Schumacher entering F1 without his father’s guidance, Vettel stepped up to fill the void. This mentorship stemmed from Vettel’s Ferrari days when Schumacher Jr was part of the team’s development program. Once Mick graduated to join Haas, he found a mentor and on-track rival in Vettel.

Vettel was more than willing to share his knowledge and experience with Mick. “I’m happy to help where I can because he’s a great guy and obviously I have a very special connection to his father,” Vettel said. He emphasized the importance of Mick finding his own path while being open to guidance, much like he had received from Michael Schumacher.
