Mercedes driver and 6-times world champion Lewis Hamilton earns the highest salary among F1 drivers. So it really isn’t surprising to know that he owns a large number of supercars in his personal garage. However, Hamilton, being an environmentally conscious person, has made the decision to not drive his supercars any longer.

Speaking at the driver’s press conference ahead of the Tuscan Grand Prix, He said, “I don’t drive any of the cars that I own anymore. I only drive my (electric Mercedes) EQC.”

That may seem like a drastic decision, but Hamilton has always been very outspoken when it comes to the topic of protecting the environment. He recently even entered the Extreme E series of off-road racing with his own team.

Anyone else in Hamilton’s place would surely not part with a car collection like his. According to media reports, his personal garage includes a Ferrari LaFerrari, a Pagani Zonda, a McLaren P1, and a 1960’s Shelby Cobra among others. However, Lewis has always believed in the motto, ‘If you want to change the world, you must first change your ways.’

Further elaborating on his decision, he said, “It’s difficult because there are people (who say) like, ‘yeah, but you race a Formula One car around every weekend.’

“Some of it’s education because not everybody knows the footprint that our sport currently has and what we’re doing in terms of trying to improve that. But I’m making a lot of changes in my personal life.”

According to the Mercedes man, he aims for all these to be long term changes. Not just some things that he would adhere to merely in his career as a Formula 1 driver.

Hamilton said, “I’m trying to do my best whilst I’m still doing what I love doing. I think (I’m) helping to put pressure on people here, in this sport. Because there’s lots of areas in which we can be way more sustainable.

“I think I’ve got more power to shift it from within, rather than retire and do it from the outside.”

Well, the man certainly makes for an excellent role model, doesn’t he? It’s always great to see try to see people do the best they can, even as a lone warrior, to conserve the environment. Lewis for captain planet, anybody?
