For Mercedes, keeping uncertainty afloat for Lewis Hamilton is the name of the game. The Briton’s contract is about to end at the end of this season. Yet, there has been no confirmed update on the renewal. All there is to hear from Mercedes Team boss Toto Wolff is that the contract is in the works and it will be signed soon. But considering the amount of delay there’s been, Hamilton is bound to have some doubts creeping in.

What was supposed to be done within “half an hour”, and only requiring the duo to “sit over a coffee”, has taken months. Well, maybe the coffee maker in the Mercedes motorhome might have stopped working. It’s surprising that in 2 long months, the $2.7 billion-worth F1 team and $1.6 billion-worth Team Principal haven’t fixed the machine yet. But jokes aside, now the process seems too dragged out for what should have taken only a few hours.

Earlier in July, the 7-time champion said that the core of the contract had been sorted out. Then, it was just between his and Mercedes’ lawyers to finalize the details and get going. However, it’s still not done and the W14’s performance too is not giving good assurance. After all this drama, what if this is the end of the road for the seven-time champion? That’s not something that will go down well with him and for Mercedes.

Before the Canadian GP, Toto Wolff had said that it is a matter of days before Hamilton puts pen to paper and their future partnership is finalized. It has been almost 2 months since then. Who knew that the number of days could go in the higher double digits?

But Wolff has finally acknowledged what all fans and outsiders have been feeling for so long. “I know it looks a little bit, ‘Why is this not done and dusted?’ But it is simply down to trivial things that just need to be cleaned up in the contract,” said Wolff, as quoted by Mirror.

Acknowledging is one thing, acting on it is another. The sooner Toto Wolff does it, the sooner the weight gets lifted off Lewis Hamilton’s shoulders. And with one less thing to worry about, maybe his performance on the racetrack improves.
