Can Toto Wolff's power unit boost turn Carlos Sainz into a serious contender for the F1 title?

Something major is brewing between Alpine and Mercedes! Toto Wolff recently disclosed that they are holding discussions with Alpine regarding the potential supply of Mercedes Power Units from 2026 onwards. Alpine will switch from using Renault Power Units to being a customer team in Formula 1. This could be another big step towards enhancing the French team.

If Alpine switches to Mercedes power units, it could attract top drivers like Carlos Sainz and Flavio Briatore’s strategy could materialize. Moreover, Mercedes is likely to supply engines to the Enstone-based team after Aston Martin’s partnership ends in 2025. Toto Wolff indicated that having more power units on the grid would accelerate development under the new regulations. At the same time, Wolff emphasized the complex situation this shift could present. “We like the idea of replacing Aston Martin with another team, which teaches us a lot,” the team boss said.

Toto Wolff further explained what the new partnership would bring for his team.“From an organizational perspective, I think the more power units we have, the better it is to accelerate some of the developments or reliability.” However, Wolff mentioned that discussions have not progressed beyond exchanging opinions or exploratory talks. “Alpine needs to decide whether they want to continue with their Formula 1 engine program or not,” the 52-year-old suggested.

The final call will be from Bruno Famin’s side. “And only after they make this strategic decision would we dive into our agreements. But we are open, and we have told them that,” Wolff added. He also said Alpine won’t decide before the summer break because it’s a complex decision and needs more time.

What does this mean for Carlos Sainz? If not Mercedes then a team running on Mercedes’ power unit won’t be a bad deal.

Toto Wolff’s power unit supply could boost Carlos Sainz’s stay at Alpine only if he chooses to join the team

Ever since Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari contract termination surfaced earlier this year, fans can’t help but speculate about his future in F1. Experts have analyzed the best choice for the Spaniard. But, ‘Smooth Operator’ has been too indecisive. A queue of offers showed up before him with teams like Williams, Sauber/Audi, and Mercedes emerging as potential options. However, Sainz remains silent about his future.

Meanwhile, Alpine under Flavio Briatore’s leadership has been looking out for the 29-year-old. Rumors circulated a few weeks ago that discussions were advancing between the two parties, but nothing more has come out ever since. However, with the new possible partnership with Mercedes, Alpine could emerge as a strong force on the tracks. This would be the right bait for Carlos Sainz.

With 2026 regulations, F1 dynamics will change. Mercedes might have a power unit like their 2014 championship winner. Could this mean Alpine might be on the same platform as the Silver Arrows, given the deal is signed? If yes, Sainz could retain his ‘El Matador’ tag even with Alpine.
