Mercedes’ 2022 Formula 1 season has been a disaster. However, they did manage to pull some traction in the middle phase of the season. But the Asian leg of the Championship, which saw F1 return to both Suzuka and Marina Bay, was a one to forget for the Silver Arrows.

Now that the 3rd place in Constructors’ Championship is all that Mercedes can hope for, team principal Toto Wolff has a grim message for the fate of the W13. As it would appear, the team based in Brackley quickly wants to shut the chapter on the ill-fated W13 and shift all of their focus to 2023.

Wolff began by saying, “The double round in Singapore and Japan was frustrating for the team, because we weren’t able to maximize the car’s race pace.” (translated via Google Translate). However, he went on to detail the goal Mercedes has set themselves for in the last few races of the season, which is to “obtain as many lessons as possible in the development race for 2023.”

He explained how they aimed to go about it. “In Austin we will bring our last update package of the year.”. He concluded by saying, “this will not drastically change our fortunes, but we hope it will take us a step forward and bring us closer to the first.”.

Wolff explained why he believes that things would be brighter for the team from Brackley in 2023. “First you have to understand what the root cause is for your non performance. And then you have to peel the various skins off… He continued, “And the answer’s no, we are not. But I think a big chunk of the performance that we are missing, we have discovered.”.
