Valtteri Bottas took a surprise pole at the Mexican Grand Prix Qualifying session on Saturday. The Mercedes had been behind their rivals Red Bull all weekend until the last session of the qualifying. He will start ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton with Max Verstappen in P3. But Team Principal Toto Wolff stated that they have not discussed team orders yet.

Wolff mentioned that the result is as surprising for them as anyone watching. He praised Bottas’ lap and claimed he knew what he was doing throughout the entire session. But when asked if Bottas will let Hamilton let go tomorrow for the win, Wolff mentioned they will discuss it later with both drivers.

Sometimes circumstances make it necessary: Toto Wolff

As reported by Motorsport. tr, the Austrian mentioned that the discussion of the team orders is dreaded by every racer. But if the decision is crucial, then they would make it.

“I’m a racer and I always feel like getting into an argument like this is somehow disappointing. But sometimes circumstances make it necessary. Obviously, the situation is different now and, as we always do, we will discuss this at our strategy meeting tomorrow morning,” said Wolff.

The Mercedes team boss mentioned that he will certainly discuss the situation pre-race with the drivers.“We’re going to address this situation and discuss it with Valtteri and Lewis first. After all, they’re both involved in this discussion.”

Then we’ll see if the scenario in the race really forces us to make such a decision.” said Wolff.

Bottas, who took his third pole of the season too looked onboard with the situation. He stated that if the order came, he would move aside for Hamilton to take the win.

“If we have a reasonable opportunity to help Lewis, of course, I will do that as a teammate,” said Valtteri.

Although it would be the right and logical thing for both Mercedes and Bottas to do. We do hope that it doesn’t come to that Mercedes wins the race on merit rather than team orders.
