Apart from Peter Bonnington’s “Get in there Lewis!”, there is another common team radio message that follows every time Lewis Hamilton takes a podium finish. That is him thanking everybody from the team paddock to the workers in the Mercedes factory. However, things don’t always go your way in Formula 1. When things do not go as planned, drivers are often heard criticizing their team openly on the radio. Lewis Hamilton is no different. When he celebrates a win, he thanks them openly, and when he takes them to task, he does that in the open as well.
But there is something that sets him apart from the others.
Toto Wolff on what sets Lewis Hamilton apart from the pack
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently appeared in an interview with David Coulthard for Channel 4. In the interview, he talked about his personal life, how he got into Formula 1 in a managerial capacity, and narrated some crazy incidents from his life. One topic that was bound to catch everyone’s attention was surrounding Lewis Hamilton.
Talking about angry messages from Lewis on the team radio, Toto said, “Sometimes the lion comes out and you hear these angry messages but that is completely normal for a racing driver and he is the one that, after hearing that, he is apologetic because he has a big heart.”
Toto also revealed the bond he shares with Lewis. “With Lewis, it was always very much on the same eye level and I would say today that we are friends, but we care.”
He continued, “I care for him, he cares for me and he cares for the team also, and you can see that on many occasions.”

The 7-time world champion discovered his love for cars at 6. That was when his father bought him an RC car and got him into local RC car racing tournaments. In a recently posted video by Sky Sports, Hamilton revealed the joy he got from repairing and modifying his RC car in the backyard and how that helped him discover his interest in car engineering and mechanics.
In the latter part of the video, Lewis surprised kids from RC Vision with a visit to the Silverstone. RC Vision is an organization in Lambeth, London, that is working to keep kids from the streets off of bad influences and engage them in RC racing and teach them engineering and the mechanical aspect of those cars.

Lewis met the kids and gave them a motivating talk. He said, “It is possible to come from nowhere and get somewhere if you truly believe in it and work hard. You have to believe in yourself. But there’s nothing that can really get in your way except for yourself and of course, there are barriers but that’s what we’re trying to change, right?”
