Mercedes were the dominant force in Formula 1 just a while back. And their reign over Formula 1 was so supreme that no one dared to imagine it being any other way. That being said, with the advent of the latest iteration of F1 cars, the Goliaths of motorsport fell. And the way that things are shaping up in 2023, it would appear that they are nowhere near getting back up anytime soon. But with the buck stopping at team boss and stakeholder, Toto Wolff, is this failure enough to tarnish the reputation he’s built in this sport since 2014?
Team principals are often the people whose necks are on the line. We’ve seen it multiple times. Be that as it may, what Wolff has created with the Silver Arrows is nothing short of something very, very special. And if he’s still in the position to call the shots after two disastrous years, there’s something about the man that emanates such confidence from the upper echelons of Mercedes’ hierarchy.

Netflix’s Drive to Survive has given fans an excruciatingly insightful inside line into the F1 paddock. And with it, we’ve learned a thing or two about Wolff, too. During a recent episode of The VF1 Show with VF & Vincenzo, the hosts discussed a peculiar yet amazing trait of Wolff’s.
“Toto kind of spits back, “Well, I have it printed out that Sergio [Perez] said it’s a bad car.” But it’s also interesting to see because now we’ve heard multiple things like that from Toto, right, “I’ve sent you an email!” remarked the host while discussing that iconic scene from DTS’ latest season.
But how does Wolff stand out? “He’s still very old school. He still has that old-school mentality of “I’ve got the receipts, I’ve printed it out and I am sending you emails. There’s paper trail, he’s very precise. You’ve got to respect that.”
Even though Wolff is a tough nut to crack, reality has started to sink in for the Austrian.

In 2022, when Mercedes first fell, there was still an inkling of hope to make a stunning comeback in 2023. However, after the chips fell this year, Wolff has come out with a sanguine admittance of defeat.
RacingNews365.com quoted him as saying, “We’ve talked about over the last few years every series ends one day. There is no team [in any sport] that is winning every single championship over its lifetime. And that has happened.”
