After the British GP, Nyck de Vries is stranded in the middle of nowhere. It’s similar to how Mick Schumacher felt after getting ousted from Haas in 2022, but worse. And worse because Schumacher spent 2 years in Haas while de Vries got less than half a season. And another similarity is the Toto Wolff factor. The Austrian has been having talks with de Vries as he did with Schumacher before signing him as Mercedes’ reserve driver. So what’s cooking there?

After Silverstone, Red Bull took the decision to axe the Dutch rookie from AlphaTauri. And that came as a surprise to everybody. But the bigger surprise was seeing de Vries meeting Wolff over a cup of coffee in Monaco, after his sacking. In the latest episode of ‘The Fast And The Curious’ podcast, Betty Glover and Christian Hewgill spoke in detail about de Vries’ situation and the potential Mercedes connection.

Hewgill said, “He’s a talented racing driver. And there would be some that don’t think he was given enough of a chance in Formula 1. He was racing in a very uncompetitive car. He might get another chance at Formula 1 – he’s got links to Mercedes. He might well be a test driver with Mercedes like we’ve seen with Mick Schumacher. He might go back to Formula E where he was a World Champion before.”

Glover expanded on the Wolff topic, saying, “Have you guys seen that picture that’s floating around on Twitter by the way? Of Nyck de Vries sat down having a coffee with Toto Wolff. Toto Wolff doesn’t waste any time. Blimey!”

“Blimey!” indeed. Wolff is quite opportunistic in nature and it works wonders for him. Similar to how he rescues stranded F1 drivers and gives them a lifeline, Lewis Hamilton, apparently had a role to play in getting Wolff a job for the Brad Pitt F1 movie.

There was a lot of buzz around the Brad Pitt starrer ‘Apex’ (working title) being shot at the British GP. And to train the Oscar-winning actor for driving in an F1 car, Wolff had sent him to a racing school in France. But how did Wolff get linked up with the movie, you ask? Well, the credit goes to Sir Lewis Hamilton.

On Sky Germany, Wolff said, as quoted by GPfans, “Yes, I’m also a co-producer. It was a very interesting story. You may ask, what’s the advantage of being a co-producer? Well, eventually you get your name on the third or fourth page of the end credits. Yay. Penny, Lewis’s manager, made me one (a co-producer), and of course, we helped the team with the car.”

Mercedes might be having a crisis in F1 at the moment. But their Team Principal is making sure to pull all stops to propel them back to the top. Even if it means more meetings during breaks between race weekends.
