Formula One world introduced a budget cap to level the playing field. For the 2021 season, it was $175 million, and for the forthcoming season, it will be $140 million. Mercedes is a team that provides engines to Aston Martin, Williams, and McLaren on the grid, and their team principal has an interesting proposition. Toto Wolff has stated that for power unit manufacturers, the budget cap should be around $70 million. The Austrian boss mentioned it should be implemented from the moment the new engine has been made.

Being asked by Auto Motor und Sport about a budget cap on power unit suppliers, Wolff replied, “At 70 million dollars. From the moment the new engine is ready.”

McLaren boss reveals the demands made by one F1 team regarding budget cap

The budget cap was not the only new thing in F1 in 2021. The sport also introduced sprint races at the British GP, Italian GP, and Brazilian GP. Having to take part in more races, teams wanted to have an increase in the budget.

Hence, when the sport offered to pay a part of the revenue generated from the sprint races, McLaren CEO, Zak Brown reveals how much one of the teams demanded.

Speaking to BBC, “A couple of teams, and one team in particular, wanted a $5m budget cap increase, which was just ridiculous.“And no rational facts behind it. When you challenged them, they go to what if and could and you’ve got to anticipate. You sit there and go ‘This is just nonsense,” Brown concluded.
