Formula 1 isn’t just anybody’s cup of tea. Every aspect and every area of the sport needs a certain degree of skill. However, one underlying characteristic that becomes an essential part of everyone’s job in this sport is that competitive edge. That being said, the inherent intricacies of F1, and the high stakes involved has marred the brotherhood that once was and has left the paddock a very hostile playing field.
Men like Toto Wolff and Christian Horner have added a whole new dynamic to the drama F1 guarantees. These two opposing team bosses have been at loggerheads since the established pecking order of F1 pitted them against each other. But has this uber competitiveness poisoned the pool?

There is a lot of hostility when it comes to the top teams. Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes have not really seen eye-to-eye with each other for a long, long time. However, the developing dynamics of the F1 paddock may have threatened the growth of the sport.
According to the hosts of ESPN F1’s Unlapped podcast, “When you look at the political landscape of Formula 1, you have the real big teams, you know, the Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari. They are so competitive with other I think sometimes they really don’t trust each other. Even if one of them comes up with a good idea, the other one will say no just for the sake of it.”
But one man has come like a breath of fresh air for this sport. “Whereas, with someone like Guenther [Steiner], they are very closely tied to Ferrari but I think they are less of a threat to a number of teams in the way they position themselves as well,” concluded the hosts.
But is the picture really as bad as it is being painted?

In his recently released book, the Italian engineer discussed the rivalry between Horner and Wolff. He wrote, “A lot of people ask me if the whole Christian versus Toto think that you see on Drive to Survive is completely for real. ‘Do they really hate each other?’ Sometimes in the moment I think they probably do want to kill each other.”
“At the end of the day, though, we are all in this together and as much as I disagree with what this guy thinks, just like Christian will disagree with Toto sometimes and vice versa, we have to remember that ultimately we all sit under the same tree. If we didn’t remember that, we’d be kicking the s*** out of each other all the time.”
