As the Formula 1 circus arrived at the Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve for the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes seemed to have tapped into some secret power that was not present at any of the previous races in 2024. For the first time this year, the Silver Arrows managed to get one of their drivers into the pole position as George Russell scored the top spot during Saturday’s qualifying. And in the end, Russell dropped a couple of places but he ended up getting his first podium in this current season.
Prior to the Canadian GP, Toto Wolff‘s team had introduced a new front wing to the W15. And that is the secret that has completely transformed the balance troubles that the drivers were facing with the car. This goes to show that Mercedes might just be back in the game even though their rivals Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren have already captured the top two spots in the World Constructors’ Championship of 2024. It is true that the Mercedes W15 showed off great power and balance at various points throughout the Canadian GP. However, rumors claim there are still some other secrets up the German manufacturer’s sleeves.

With the Spanish Grand Prix looming ahead, Mercedes is allegedly working on a new floor addition to the W15 racecar. Thanks to George Russell and Lewis Hamilton getting the P3 and P4 positions, one can consider that the Silver Arrows will get a new boost of hope that they can be back in the game despite the team’s 88-point deficit from McLaren.
Mercedes will introduce a new update package in Spain, focusing on the car’s aerodynamic performance and interaction with the track surface.

However, none of the rumors regarding their new floor have been validated yet. As per the Canadian GP recap on the Mercedes website, Team Principal Toto Wolff has said some things about what is to come. He said, “Now, directionally, we seem to be adding performance every weekend, and we have new stuff coming, also, new parts coming in Barcelona that should help us. So I would very much hope that we can continue this positive trajectory.” Such was the improvement in the W15’s performance during the weekend in Canada that their two drivers ended up in a fight for P3 in the race.

The Silver Arrows battled for P3 during final laps in Canada
Currently, Lewis Hamilton is holding on to 8th place in the championship rankings. His teammate George Russell has captured the place right above him. Despite a record for 8 consecutive Constructors’ Championships, Mercedes has failed to ensure their drivers score some points this year. But in Canada, the W15s had a newfound power, which led Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to a battle for the third spot during the final few laps in Montreal.
At one point in time in Canada, George Russell was running fifth behind Hamilton and Oscar Piastri. But then, he overtook Piastri and ended up chasing his own teammate. Finally, Russell made a move to go past Lewis in lap 68 of the 70-lap race and finished in P3. The showdown between the two teammates created tension at the Mercedes dugout but in the end, both came out unscathed.
