With six podiums in the first 10 races, Fernando Alonso made the most shocking start to the 2023 season. The Spaniard in his new and highly improved Aston Martin challenger took everyone by surprise. However, in the F1 environment, the only constant is change, and Alonso and Co. are facing the brunt of it. From being the second fastest car on the grid, the AMR23 was nowhere close to those levels at Silverstone. Alonso quickly made up a few places but fell back into a position they “deserved” to be in the race. The first stint, before the safety car, showcased how Aston Martin has fallen short with their upgrades compared to its rivals. However, a championship hopeful Alonso at the start of the season made a pragmatic confession after his P7.

The Spaniard was brimming with confidence and aiming for a race win, at least if not for the championship at the start. However, that narrative has changed and Alonso is now grateful to be part of the front runners. In fact, as quoted by Motorsport.com, with the state of the AMR23 this season, he is more than satisfied and does not care about doing it all in the current season.

Alonso explained, We’ve been overtaken [by other teams] a bit in terms of squads that have brought some significant updates lately. The track in particular, I think was not our best layout for the package that we have.” (Translated by Google)

“To be honest, I don’t care about development. This year the car is better than expected. We’re fighting for things we probably never could have dreamed of earlier in the year. So if we can stay in the top 10 and fight with the leaders, that’s fantastic,” Alonso added.

However, Alonso isn’t one to sit ideal and accept his fate. He is an ambitious and driven individual who still wants to perform at the highest level. This is why Alonso is ensuring AMR23 will improve and not have poor outings for the rest of the season.

The oldest man on the grid could be excused for not being the most motivated. However, that’s just not in Alonso’s DNA. The Spaniard came back to win. He increased his chances by joining the Aston Martin project and now when the team isn’t at its best, he’s not sitting ideal. TP Mike Krack revealed Alonso’s constant involvement with the team and how he pushes everyone to do better.

“We were very transparent, telling him about our weaknesses, where we were as a team. We try to involve him in the process and use his input to grow,” Krack shared. He further added, “He tests us at every meeting and every race, but it’s a great learning exercise if you have someone who challenges you with experience and their desire to do well.”
