The revelation made by Sebastian Vettel at the drivers’ press conference on the 2nd of July, sent shockwaves among the fans. (Read: “No Offer on the Table” – Sebastian Vettel Reveals Ferrari Exit Wasn’t Mutual). All this while fans were under the assumption that Vettel’s contract demands were too high, and thus nobody really blamed Ferrari for the decision. Now the tables have turned.

Apart from the fans, who are upset about the treatment meted out to the 4-times world champion, former F1 driver Jenson Button is also rallying behind Vettel.

Jenson Button doesn’t think that Ferrari are justified in their treatment of Sebastian Vettel

Former world champion Jenson Button was speaking to Sky Sports ahead of qualification. Button says that he wasn’t too pleased on hearing how Vettel was treated by Ferrari. He said, “It’s a very strange excuse, the pandemic. He (Mattia Binotto) just cut him off and said ‘your services are not needed for next year.’ This is a 4-time world champion.”

Furthermore, Button said, “He’s been winning races for Ferrari, over the last few years. For me, he did a reasonably good job last year. He made some mistakes that a 4-time world champion would not normally make. But has anyone won more?”

Button makes a very good point there. Sebastian Vettel has won 14 races for Ferrari. It makes him Ferrar’s 3rd highest race winner of all time. In fact, he only falls behind Michael Schumacher (72 wins) and Niki Lauda (15 wins), the latter whom he may surpass during the course of the season.

Unfortunately for Vettel, there has always been a certain Lewis Hamilton on the grid, who possesses a superior Mercedes car, to the Ferrari that Vettel has been racing in for the last five years. That has kept the German from adding to his 4 world titles that he won with Red Bull, between 2010 and 2013.

With the season kicking off in Austria tomorrow, Vettel will have a point or two to prove to Ferrari. He’ll want to show Ferrari how wrong they were for axing him. Even though a world title seems unlikely, if the German can push the likes of Lewis Hamilton to the very end, he’d leave the Maranello-based outfit as a happy man.
