Mick Schumacher is currently struggling with everything that’s going on in the drivers’ market. It seems it has also affected his driving. The German driver crashed his car on a wet FP session in Suzuka. Furthermore, Haas team principal Guenther Steiner admitted he was frustrated after the crash.

However, Mick Schumacher said he would be very surprised if his crash in FP ends up being the reason for him not getting a new contract. Before the race, as per rumors, Mick Schumacher and Haas were in discussion of extending the German’s contract by a year.

However, Schumacher’s crash in the treacherous conditions in Suzuka, according to Steiner, caused “half a million euros of rubbish”. 

When asked about whether the Haas principal will tear up the alleged contract because of his crash, Mick said, “I would be surprised if that was the case.”

He further added, “I mean, the performance is there. It’s a moment. But I’ve been showing good performances lately and that should count for more.”

Time is quickly running out for Mick to secure a seat for next year. Alpine announced the signing of Pierre Gasly from AlphaTauri and the Frenchman will be replaced by Nyck de Vries.

Haas boss hands Mick Schumacher a lifeline for 2023

Guenther Steiner has handed Mick Schumacher a lifeline after his recent comments. There are only 2 seats up for grabs after Alpine and AlphaTauri named their driving duo for 2023. This leaves Mick Schumacher with only Haas or Williams as realistic options.

However, Team principal Guenther’s comments would have boosted his confidence for next year. Steiner said, “I would say I’m done in the moment with rookies for the foreseeable future. But I mean, we need to see what is best for the team or who’s the best person or who is the best driver to bring the team forward.”

He also added, “There is not a lot out there anymore on open seats and drivers. There’s not a lot of options, so we just want to make sure that we take the right decision and have no regrets next year.”

Haas is still looking for a partner to accompany Kevin Magnussen next year. Mick has enjoyed a decent spell with the American outfit and will be looking to extend his stay with them.
