Lewis Hamilton has had a fairly stable career in terms of the teams he raced with. Moving from Woking to Brackley was the only major move of his career, switching from McLaren to Mercedes. There were rumors that he may have joined Red Bull. However, one team the Brit has never really been linked with is Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton may not be sweating too much that he never got a chance to drive for Ferrari. The Scuderia is a team that many world champions covet to drive for. Nonetheless, Hamilton dominated with his team Mercedes to become one of the greatest drivers in F1.
On this prospect of Lewis joining Ferrari, former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone put forth his point of view. In a 2020 interview with Autocar, Ecclestone addressed the reasons why the Briton should not be racing for the Maranello outfit.
He said, “I don’t think he [Lewis Hamilton] would get on very well there [at Ferrari]. He’s used to being more or less in charge. If he went and they remained in love with [Charles] Leclerc, they would bury him [Hamilton].”
Lewis has always been a prominent driver at both McLaren and Mercedes. He probably never received a #2 driver tag and precisely so. While Ferrari has not been the best team in the past decade or so.
Since 2019, Scuderia has invested in Charles Leclerc. So Bernie’s point makes sense that Hamilton would not want to compete with Leclerc for being Ferrari’s priority.
Hamilton has made Mercedes his home since he joined in 2013. His bonding with the team has been quite special. So it makes little sense for Lewis to jump ship to Maranello.
The What-If Scenario of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari
It is quite hard to imagine Lewis Hamilton wearing red overalls for the Italian giant. Still, for a what-if scenario, let’s assume how and when would have Lewis chosen to drive for Ferrari.
Imagine, after his nail-biting battle with Nico Rosberg in 2016, Hamilton left the Silver Arrows to go to Ferrari. It would have been one of the biggest driver transfers in F1. Lewis driving for the Scuderia in the 2017 season – a rare, unimaginable sight!
But hold on, whom did he replace at Ferrari? Another possible driver transfer during this time was Sebastian Vettel going to Mercedes. Thus, it would have been a straight swap between Brackley and Maranello. And the 2017 and 2018 title battles would have been slightly different.

Vettel would have partnered with Rosberg (who may have stayed in F1) in the Mercedes. While Hamilton would have been driving alongside Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari. It may have been a 3-way fight for the championship between Hamilton, Vettel, and Rosberg. Let’s not even get into who came out on top, because it’s too good to be true.
