Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen revealed that he wanted to stay on with the team after his contract expires in 2021. The Dane reckons Haas can take advantage of the upcoming budget cap to change the team’s fortunes. Magnussen also disclosed that he had an option in Haas, which he wanted to exploit.

Haas hasn’t had the best fortune in recent times. In 2019, the team struggled to get a good grasp of the working of the VF19. The car was fundamentally flawed, which resulted in the American team dropping down the order more often than not.

Magnussen put in some phenomenon qualifying sessions last season. The Dane delivered with some excellent qualy laps in Austria and Monaco. Sadly, the VF19’s race pace let Magnussen down during several races.

Now, the team’s future is up in the air with owner Gene Haas suggesting the team had to deliver if they had any intentions of staying in Formula 1.

But there is reason to cheer with the upcoming budget cap.  With F1 enforcing a financial ceiling of 145 million dollars, the midfield has a real chance to close the gap to the top teams.

Speaking to BT, Kevin said:

I really want to stay with Haas”

“They have an option on me, and it would really suit me if they use it”

“I am sure that Haas will be a good place to be for years to come,

Moreover, the American team also gets a minor lifeline with the regulations staying the same for next season. 

“And with the budget cap being introduced in 2021, we can get closer to the top.”

“It’s also been decided that everyone will continue with the 2020 cars in 2021, so that means it also makes sense to continue with the same drivers,”

Our new car was promising in the winter as it seems like we solved the problems that plagued us last year.”

Magnussen revealed that he used the shutdown “sensibly”.
