There have been several teammates in F1 who hated each other’s guts. It was very difficult for drivers to reconcile after they clashed with each other during a race. But, every trend has an exception. And funnily enough for this trend, it’s Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen. Who would think that this duo collided with each other regularly in races and are still great friends? Especially, looking at Max Verstappen and his other rivalries, it is hard to believe how he has managed to keep his bond with Daniel. Perhaps that’s the charm and humor of the Honey Badger which often leaves Max in splits.

Back in 2017, this Red Bull duo was nearing the peak of their tensions. Still, Daniel managed to keep all quite cool and happy-going off the track. According to Fox Sports, Ricciardo once told Verstappen a really crude X-rated joke and amused his teammate effortlessly.

The duo was making mocktails for a fun activity. After they finished making them, Max questioned Daniel in confusion saying, “I thought they were cocktails?” On this, the witty Australian replied, “Apparently without the alcohol — there’s no c*ck.” Max was so amused, he literally spat out the drink he was having – their team boss Christian Horner‘s beloved Red Bull!

Ricciardo cited how he liked this thing about his younger teammate. He stated, “I knew that would make him laugh. That’s the good thing about having a really young teammate — silly jokes still work.” Despite leaving Red Bull in 2018, Daniel has always cared for Max, be it by giving him health advice or racing advice.

After a 4-year split, this bromance has reunited at Milton Keynes again. Be it in a third driver role, Ricciardo is probably back “home” at Red Bull. Although, will it help him to get a racing return to F1? That is the major question.

Could Daniel Ricciardo again end up as teammates with Max Verstappen?

Ever since Daniel Ricciardo made his Red Bull return, there have been speculations of him getting a chance at the team again. He may have split with the Austrian team in 2018 over differences with Max Verstappen. But, the Aussie driver also has probably rekindled that bond, both with the team and Max.

While, at the moment the team has Sergio Perez settled in well, being Verstappen’s compatriot, nothing lasts forever. The tension between Checo and Max in Brazil last season has been the major stimulus for speculations about Daniel.

To top it up, Perez has not been matching Verstappen as much. While Red Bull has been satisfied with Checo’s performances, this perception can change in the future. If Red Bull gets involved in a tight championship fight with Mercedes or Ferrari, they may feel the pinch of Sergio’s performance gap to Max.

Thus, the Honey Badger being a 3rd driver at RBR makes people wonder about a mid-season swap (god forbid), by the Milton Keynes team. And, about a mid-season driver change, it won’t be the first time that Red Bull may resort to this tactic. You may ask Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly about that. So, Perez may be the most vulnerable party if things go south with Verstappen again amidst a tight championship battle.

As for Ricciardo’s options beyond Red Bull, it ain’t looking good. Considering his stance for a top-team seat, even if Mercedes or Ferrari have a seat to fill in 2024 or beyond, they would look at younger drivers. Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris are much more attractive and dynamic in current form to Mercedes and Ferrari respectively over Danny Ric.

So, it just leaves Red Bull and Daniel to address the question of his return to F1. Unless Sergio Perez drops off drastically over his 2022 performance, a Ricciardo-Verstappen reunification in the RBR garage is unlikely. Do you think, the Milton Keynes team will have to swap Perez and Ricciardo in 2023?
