The 2023 British Grand Prix will prove to be a game-changer for the sport. But we aren’t talking about the racing on the track. It is a meeting that will take place after the British GP between the FIA, team representatives, F1, and tire supplier Pirelli, where the ban on electric tire blankets will be discussed and finalized. Many drivers have spoken against the ban on tire blankets and George Russell is the latest entrant to that list.

As the world attempts to go greener, sustainability has become one of F1’s top priorities. In 2022, in an attempt to be more sustainable, the FIA decided to ban electric tire blankets from 2024 onwards. And no tire blankets would mean colder tires and changes in the dynamics of pitstops. Since then, drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Charles Leclerc have criticized the move.

During the pre-season testing in Bahrain, Hamilton spoke about change. He said, “This is dangerous and pointless. I’ve tested tires that haven’t been warmed up before, and I’m telling you – sooner or later it’s going to crash.” This has now been seconded by his Mercedes teammate, George Russell.

Russell said, as quoted by Speedweek.com, “Honestly, I don’t think the sport is currently in a position to use these tires in the race. I would be worried about the mechanics in the pit lane who are there during the pit stops. And also about the first lap on cold tires. If we do that, there will be accidents, I have no doubt about that.”

The 2022 season was a fabulous one for George Russell. He finished the season at 4th in the standings with 275 points while Hamilton scored 230, securing P6. But the 2023 season has been a turnaround for him as he is struggling a bit to find consistency.

In their podcast ‘Formula For Success’, David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan were discussing the same. They warned Russell to not get too ahead of himself after a successful 2022 season. Coulthard said, “But we sort of gave warning to just be careful of getting ahead of yourself(Russell) because a Lewis when he’s on form is a formidable team-mate. There’s a class there.”
