The 2023 Austrian GP memories are something that Mercedes might want to put away. For Lewis Hamilton, Friday was bad, Saturday was worse, and Sunday was frustrating. On the team radio, he was constantly complaining about being uncomfortable with the car and pointing out why other drivers weren’t penalized. After a point, Toto Wolff shut him up by saying, “The car is bad, we know that… Please drive it.” However with the British GP next, Wolff has restored normalcy before he receives backlash from Hamilton’s home crowd.
Mercedes showed signs of a comeback after a double podium in Spain. In Canada, only Hamilton stood on the podium, while George Russell DNFed. And in Austria, none of the drivers got anywhere near the podium places. Russell finished in P7 and Hamilton in P8. The performance graph turned upwards only to go back down. And there seemed to be a conflict between Hamilton and the team during the race. But Toto Wolff is optimistic about another good performance in Silverstone.
According to Motorsport-Total, Wolff said, “We’re happy to be able to race again after a tough weekend in Austria. We scored a handful of points, but we didn’t have the pace for much more. The team has worked hard to analyze our performance and learn lessons from it. We took the result with composure and will try to resume the momentum we have built up in the past races. With the next upgrades and experiments coming up at Silverstone, there’s reason for optimism.” [translated via Google]

Toto Wolff is one of the top F1 bosses. And he knows when and how certain situations need to be dealt with and settled. So, in the most recent interview with Sky Sports in Downing Street on Tuesday, the Austrian heaped praise on the 7-time Champion. And he not only spoke about his racing but also his personality.
Wolff said, as quoted by crash.net, “Lewis Hamilton is clearly the most important personality in our sport, he is so multi-dimensional. It is not only the racing driver and World Champion but he is also trailblazing for diversity and sustainability. There are no limits for Lewis Hamilton as an entrepreneur as a politician. I think he is one of the most spectacular personalities and characters I’ve ever met.”
