US-based Andretti Autosport have been one of the fewest racing outfits desperately eyeing a move to Formula One in recent years. This pretty much has everything to do with Liberty Media’s major interests in reducing the cost of running an F1 team in what is arguably the most expensive racing series of all time.

Hence, Michael Andretti has since been pushing really hard to find his team a spot on the F1 grid. The American outfit did engage in talks with many inferior teams like Haas, and Williams, but neither came to fruition. And, of course, why would they?

Why the F1 deals did not work out

Haas are looking comfortable amid the arrival of Nikita Mazepin who managed to bring in a massive sponsorship through Uralkali, led by his father, Dmitry Mazepin. Meanwhile, Williams have only recently earned themselves a new owner in a reputable American firm, Dorilton Capital.

The only deal that almost went through was with Alfa Romeo. Andretti and the Sauber-led outfit initiated talks over a potential buy-in, but, in the end, the demands were a bit too high from the selling party. One good reason is the fact that Sauber have their own wind tunnel facility in Switzerland.

Well, that doesn’t seem to hinder Andretti’s Formula One hopes as Mario Andretti has affirmed that his son is already in talks with the FIA over bringing in a new team for the 2024 season.

How much does it cost to field an F1 team?

By the looks of it, Andretti might need to garner around $800 million to successfully develop a commendable racing team in Formula One. Of course, the entire Andretti family will be able to put together a few hundreds of millions of dollars.

And, the rest could possibly arrive from their sponsors. What’s more, if the talks do go through successfully, it is likely that Andretti will partner with Renault for an engine deal at least until the end of 2025 before potentially moving to another supplier depending on how the 2026 era shapes up.

After failing to complete any of the deals with the active Formula One teams, Andretti has now opted for a different route to the grid. Michael Andretti is apparently keen on bringing his racing outfit onto the F1 grid by 2024. Only in this case, it doesn’t seem like a replacement to any existing teams. Instead, if the FIA does approve the request, Andretti Autosport will enter the racing grid as the 11th individual outfit.

Michael has applied to the FIA to field a new F1 team starting in 2024. His entry, Andretti Global, has the resources and checks every box. He is awaiting the FIA’s determination,” Mario Andretti wrote on Twitter.

Overall, now we await a reply from the FIA. If Andretti do manage to tick all the boxes, then there is almost no stopping them from joining F1. So, will the end result prove to be a success for the Andretti family?
