Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, the driver’s market has suddenly picked up the pace. Following Valtteri Bottas announcing his move to Alfa Romeo, the domino effect has rippled through as Mercedes announced George Russell as the Finn’s replacement. And Williams didn’t wait long in announcing Red Bull reserve driver Alexander Albon as the Briton’s replacement for next season.
While there were rumors of the move happening, very few thought it would actually happen. However, not only did Williams sign the Thai, but they also retained Nicholas Latifi to bring back a Formula 2 pairing.
This sent fans and fellow drivers into ruptures on social media. Here are some of the best reactions to this announcement on Twitter.

Fans and drivers congratulate Alexander Albon for Williams F1 seat in 2022
A graduate of the Red Bull Academy, the 25-year-old made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso in the 2019 season. However, Albon got a surprise promotion to Red Bull ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix for the rest of the season. The Austrian outfit decided to switch the Thai with Pierre Gasly, who couldn’t provide the results they looked for.
Following the season, Red Bull kept him for the 2020 season only to replace him with Sergio Perez in 2021. However, after an impressive set of performances in DTM racing, he’s back in the pinnacle of motor sport as a Williams driver next year.
Among his well-wishers, George Russell, who Albon will replace at Williams, shared a tweet congratulating him and his former teammate Latifi.
Mega happy for @WilliamsRacing, @NicholasLatifi and @alex_albon. Awesome line-up for 2022, very well deserved. 👊 pic.twitter.com/dHpg4RxvZi
