To everyone’s surprise, Mercedes fared much better than they ever hoped in the Canadian GP challenge. The team has been on an upward trajectory since the Monaco GP. More specifically, after they ditched the zero sidepod design. The same zeropod design was the source of their misery for most of 2022 and a few races in 2023, despite Lewis Hamilton openly opposing the concept. In the end, Toto Wolff and Co decided to listen to Hamilton and introduced the change in Monaco and life’s been good. In fact, there is a belief Mercedes is absolutely on the right path thanks to Hamilton. However, fans are still fuming at Mercedes for wasting precious time.
According to a report published by the news outlet Formu1a.uno, the direction Hamilton suggested last fall, the one the team is on now, is the right one. The Brit has been vocal about his displeasure with the state of the Mercedes Challenger. He even faced backlash for the same as many called him arrogant and egotistic. However, Hamilton stuck to his guns and kept pushing his team to dump the faulty zeropod concept. Luckily, Hamilton did not stop and kept pushing to take on a new developmental route which was introduced in Monaco.

Canada was proof Hamilton’s persistent nagging is paying off. Even he confessed they did not expect this performance in Montreal. “This track was more difficult for us than Barcelona, so it’s encouraging to see that in terms of pace, we were very close to Aston Martin and at Ferrari,” said Hamilton.

The fans are now raising the obvious question: why was Hamilton ignored for long? Hamilton is arguably the greatest and definitely the most successful driver in the sport’s history. Exactly why, Mercedes’ decision to ignore a seven-time world champion’s valuable opinion is the reason behind the fury.

Wish they kept their ego aside and listened to him, so they could’ve started the season with this concept

Mercedes’ ignorance towards Hamilton’s advice even started a dangerous domino effect. The team did not listen to Hamilton, which made him feel less valued. This, coupled with the state of the car, put Hamilton off of signing a new contract which is set to expire in 2024. Additionally, will the new developmental path be enough to close the gap between Red Bull or is it too late?
All these factors will play into Hamilton winning or losing out on his eighth championship. Let’s hope we see a positive outcome from the butterfly effect of Mercedes listening to their MVP.
