We might have seen people frantically turning their heads when they spot celebrities in public. Lewis Hamilton once reacted the same way, but not for a celebrity. It was the loud sound of an F1 V10 engine that was music to his ears. He wished that the V10 was still in use in F1. While the sport no longer has the deafening V10 or V8 engines, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has announced something that Hamilton will be very pleased to hear about.
At the Yas Marina GP, in a Post-Qualifying interview in 2021, Hamilton was being asked about the car and his performance. But he could not focus on the questions as an F1 car with the V10 lapped the circuit. His attention wavered, and he eventually acknowledged the engine sound instead of answering the question. He said, “Aww that sound is just so good. I mean, Ah… It’s the greatest sound of a racing car ever. Hate that they’ve got rid of it.”

As F1 takes a bigger step towards sustainability, a new set of rules and regulations come into play in 2026. The Power Units change considerably and more sustainable fuels find their way into the car. And recent announcement by Domenicali indicates that the cars will somewhat return to match the loudness that they formerly had.
He said, in an interview with Australian radio station 3AW, as quoted by racefans.net, “The intention is to make sure in the new regulation the engine [noise] itself will be higher because that’s part of our emotion. It is really what our fans want to hear and that’s the duty for us to commit to that.”
Now, Hamilton finally sees his long-awaited dream being manifested. Moreover, one bigger wish of his is coming true at Mercedes, which could help the W14 get quicker.
