After two disappointing initial races, Lewis Hamilton bounced back in the most suave fashion in Melbourne. The W14’s pace almost came as a surprise at the Albert Park Circuit where the Briton took P2. All signs pointed to a resurgence before Baku came as a brutal reality check. The P7 finish in Sprint and P6 in Main Race clearly showed that the team in Brackley had a lot of work left to do. The Miami GP wasn’t a great outing either but Hamilton drew out a big positive.

Earlier this year, Hamilton pointed to a pressing issue that almost every driver behind Red Bull is facing. He disclosed how difficult it has become to overtake. Carlos Sainz went a step further and revealed how difficult it had become to just tail the car ahead owing to the ‘dirty air coming from the diffuser. FIA, however, paid no heed to the complaints and dubbed it a non-issue.

That issue seemed to have disappeared at least for Hamilton in Miami. After a huge blunder from Team Mercedes, their star driver failed to make it to Q3 on Saturday and resultantly started the race from P13. Keeping that in mind, the P6 finish was a fantastic result. Also, the overtakes, including the one on Charles Leclerc gave glimpses of the pre-2022 Lewis Hamilton.

Motorsport.com quoted him as saying, “It was mega, just to be in a position [to overtake]. In the sprint race and the last race, I was going backwards and it is demoralizing when you are going backwards.”

“But it was great to have pace, to be seeing the cars up ahead and seeing the progress and knowing that we’re going to be battling with people. We had a couple of great overtakes as well, that is what I live for.”

The overtake on Leclerc stood out to him, a move he felt was the most satisfying for him.

Hamilton tells why catching up to Ferrari felt great

In the last couple of races, Ferrari and Mercedes have had kind of a back-and-forth between them. When Hamilton shone in Melbourne, the two Ferrari lads failed to impress. When Leclerc landed the podium finishes in Sprint and the Main Race in Azerbaijan, Hamilton struggled quite a bit. The story continued in Miami as George Russell overtook Carlos Sainz and Hamilton took on Leclerc.

“Honestly, it felt great to see the Ferrari up ahead and to be catching them bit by bit. It is really impressive that they are really quick on a single lap, but I don’t know what was going on in that race,” Hamilton continued.

“To have come from 13th and get back into the hustle with them was great. I think if I qualified where I should have qualified, I would’ve had a much easier and smoother day, but I prefer days like this where there is a bit of adversity and you have to put it all together and deliver.”
