Over the years, Formula 1 has become a safer sport than it once used to be. That being said, it is still an extremely dangerous sport, capable of surprising even the most experienced. Lewis Hamilton, for some reason, never felt that fear of the dangers that come with the sport. Outside of F1, though, it’s a different story. He revealed it all in an interview with none other than the tennis queen, Serena Williams.

The friendship between Serena and Lewis is one of talent recognizing talent. Having grown up to become the greatest in their respective sports, they both faced one common hurdle: racism. That is perhaps one of the biggest bonding factors between them. In fact, when Serena once faced an ugly incident of racist abuse, Lewis unapologetically stood behind her.

The duo came together in 2017 for an interview, not both as interviewees, though. The only interviewee was Hamilton, and the interviewer was Momma Smash! Serena, who has attended multiple Grand Prix cheering for her good friend, knows how dangerous the sport is.

In the interview posted on Interviewmagazine.com, she asked him, “I tried to think a bit outside the box.”

“There are a lot of elements that go into creating a champion, among them the ability to confront your fears. I’ve seen you race. Do you have … any fears?”

Lewis replied, “In my sport, I don’t. I don’t know what it is about me. When I was younger, my dad used to go, ‘Is he really mine? Because this kid’s crazy. He’s not scared of doing anything that comes in conjunction with adrenaline.'”

“There are fears I have outside of racing, though, like spiders. When I’m in Australia, I check under the toilet seat,” he added.

Hamilton never shies away from speaking his mind when it comes to any discrimination. Serena may be one of the greatest athletes of all time, but that did not show in her earnings. That irked Lewis and he did not hold back.

When Hamilton spoke against the pay disparity

The income disparity between men and women, white people, and people of color is a known issue around the world. While that is clearly evident in everyday jobs, it came to the fore in 2018’s list of high-paid sports people. No woman made the list and Lewis Hamilton did not take well to the fact.

Speaking during the Canadian GP race weekend, Racefans quoted Lewis as saying, “Serena is in the top three of the greatest athletes of all time above a lot of, if not all, the people on that list, so it is a big, big question why? It just shows you we are still in the stone age and that needs to change. Serena has already spoken of how difficult it is.”

“She has been up against Maria Sharapova and she had more results than Maria but Maria – and not just her but other, particularly white players she was playing against – were earning more money than her. Yet her results were higher.”
