In an interview with GQ back in 2012, Lewis Hamilton was speaking about how F1 can make a return to the USA. As the US Grand Prix was also taking place in Texas the same year, Lewis was speaking about how to get the American audiences excited about F1.

While addressing the same, Hamilton touched upon how Hollywood can make a good appeal by producing a movie on F1 racing. He then pointed out Sylvester Stallone’s attempt at a racing movie. Lewis said, “Sylvester Stallone did a racing movie, didn’t he? Not one of his best.”

Stallone’s movie project on racing titled “Driven”, got released in 2001. The Golden Globe award winner back then had produced and written the screenplay for this $72 million dollar project. The movie was not a financial success as it raked in only $54 million, as per the-numbers.com.

As per Rotten Tomatoes, it had a score of 14% and an Audience score of 33%. Hamilton stated that he may want to better such an attempt at a racing movie in Hollywood. He said, “I’d love to hear any ideas [on a racing movie].”

There is a possibility that the film’s shooting will take place during actual Grand Prix weekends in 2023. Apparently, there may be more cameras for shooting content than for covering races in the paddock.

Besides the film, Hamilton is also looking to produce a docuseries on his journey to F1. The 7X champion is looking to do some impactful storytelling through these projects.

While movies on racing and motorsport are not uncommon, few have executed the projects well to balance reality and story. Ford vs. Ferrari in 2019 did a good job of recreating Ford’s Le Mans win. Rush (2013) was also an amazing attempt at an F1 biopic of Niki Lauda. Which is your favorite racing movie?
